What is drainlaying, anyway?

As stated by New Zealand Plumbers, Drainlayers & Gasfitters Association Inc., Drainlaying is “any work involving installation, alteration or repairs to a drain, including the fixing or unfixing of a drain to an onsite wastewater system (septic tank) or any trap”. This means that Drainlaying is the work of correctly installing effective water drainage systems for any building, to protect the public health and environment by preventing wastewater from coming back to the surface and connecting it to wastewater treatment stations.

There are different sectors of drainlaying work, which mainly divide into four categories: residential, commercial, industrial and public sector. Residential works are, for example, a new house’s drains installation, whereas commercial refers to systems placed in a commercial building or a larger housing complex. Hotels, restaurants, shopping complexes and parking lots are also part of this category. The third category relates to industrial, and this covers projects such as factories or warehouses. And last but not least, the public sector; these works include repair or installation of public stormwater or sewers. At Easy Flow Drainage, we provide services to all kinds of industries.

The person in charge to carry out this work is called a drainlayer. To be legally allowed to perform these sorts of works, the team at Easy Flow Drainage had to complete a New Zealand Certificate in Drainlaying successfully. It is then mandatory to pass the Plumbing, Gasfitting and Drainlaying Board exam to apply for a tradesman license and registration. This process ensures the high quality of the service upheld, and the peace of mind that the person has the skills and knowledge to perform it, complying with the Building Code.

It is pretty common to find people who try to do the jobs by themselves, but by law and for health and safety reasons, it is restricted to an authorised drainlayer to carry them out. It is also recommended that homeowners delegate this task to registered drainlayers, as any unauthorised work may affect their insurance policy cover. It’s best to leave it to those who know best! However, you can still clear blocked drains on your own, as long as there is no pipe altering or repairing involved, in which case, it should be left to a registered person.
